What is the TEACCH program?

The TEACCH program is one of the discrete learning formats and was developed by Schopler in North Carolina. TEACCH means Treatment and Education for Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children and can be translated into the treatment and education of autistic and communicationally impaired children. (Schopler & Mesibov, 1994; Mesibov, Shea & Schopler, 2004)

Key features of this programme include learning in a structured environment with clear expectations and schedules, as well as early guidance on self-employment. Pictures, symbols and word cards illustrate the learning situation (Bernard-Opitz & Häußler, 2010).
