What is the TEACCH-program?

The TEACCH program is one of the discrete learning formats and was developed in North Carolina by Schopler. TEACCH stands for Treatment and Education for Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children and can be translated as treatment and education of autistic and communication-impaired children. (Schopler & Mesibov, 1994; Mesibov, Shea & Schopler, 2004)

The program has two main features. First, it is taught in a structured environment with clear expectations and schedules. Second, it provides early guidance on independence. Pictures, symbols, and word cards help illustrate the learning situation (Bernard-Opitz & Häußler, 2010).
